Stress

Some speculate that 90% of visits to primary care physicians stem from stress related conditions. Imagine if we could reduce the world’s stress level. We’d be a much healthier society!

WHAT CAUSES STRESS?

That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? From monthly bills, to caring for children and aging parents, to on-the-job stress, there’s no shortage of factors that contribute to stress. But while everyone experiences it, it’s not something to be taken lightly. Allowing your body to absorb too much stress is directly linked to numerous health issues, including cancers, cardiovascular disease, accidents and suicide.

COMMON SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Panic attacks
  • GI issues, including IBS
  • Adrenal Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Migraines and other headaches

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

According to the American Institute of Stress, 77% of adults regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress.

Stress affects your emotional and mental state. The emotions most commonly associated with stress states are fear and anxiety with acute stress; moodiness, irritability and anxiety with stress overdrive; and depression with adrenal fatigue. Recent research has been exploring the direct effects of chronic stress on the areas of the brain and neurotransmitters central to emotion, cognition and memory. Their findings indicate that prolonged stress enhances emotion in favor of memory and cognition, and actually causes physical changes in the brain. This means that previous stress influences the way you perceive, feel about and react to current stress.

PREVENTION

Daily stress management is essential in modern life. Stress sneaks up on you, so it’s important to incorporate a regular routine of stress reduction strategies. This could include exercise, yoga, meditation, spirituality/prayer, healthy eating, quality supplements, socializing, counseling or creative pursuits.
